Memphis Unites for a Day of Nostalgic Basketball Showdowns

This Saturday, White Station High School was energizing as it hosted the memorable "We Are Family" High School Alumni Basketball Series. This annual event brought together the spirited rivalry of Memphis and Shelby County school alumni in a sports-packed day featuring six thrilling games.

The basketball series featured storied rivalries between local high schools. The games started with Raleigh Egypt facing Craigmont, and Ridgeway battling it out with White Station. The action continued with Whitehaven going head-to-head against Fairley, Hamilton versus Melrose, East playing Treadwell, and finally, Mitchell taking on Booker T. Washington. Each game drew large crowds, igniting old rivalries and sparking new ones, all under the banner of fun, excitement, and community spirit.

But the day was about more than just basketball. It was also a time to honor past achievements and contribute to the future. The event paid tribute to several past state championship teams in a special ceremony. Among the honorees were the East Runnin' Mustangs of 1983, the Melrose Golden Wildcats of 1983, the Fairley Bulldogs of 1993, the White Station Spartans of 2003, and the Southwind team of 2013. These teams were celebrated for their historic wins, bringing back heroes of the past for a nostalgic nod to their contributions.

The "We Are Family" Alumni Basketball Series serves a dual purpose—rekindling old flames of high school sports glory and supporting the next generation. Proceeds from Saturday's event are earmarked for the MSCS Scholarship Fund by School Seed, a testament to the community's commitment to fostering educational opportunities for its youth.
