THE SOUTHWIND JAGUARS' JOURNEY TO SUSTAIN EXCELLENCE

In the southeastern section of Memphis, Tennessee lies the suburb of Southwind-Windyke, probably most well known for its TPC Southwind golf course, which hosts the FedEx St. Jude Classic annually. If you look a little closer, you will see one of the community’s prize possessions: Southwind High School. The Jaguars football team has made nine playoff appearances, with last year being a historic 10-0 record for the school but falling one game short of a state title appearance. The question on everybody's mind is, what's next, and can the Jags sustain the success they had last season?

A Community on the Rise

Winning a state title benefits not only the football program and school but also the surrounding community. According to a study by the Journal of Housing Economics, winning a high school football championship can increase district property values by 1.65% in the year following the championship.(Friedson & Bogin, 2013) This potential economic boost underscores the importance of the Jaguars' success to the Southwind-Windyke community.

From Adversity to Triumph

There has been nothing but growth and improvement for the Southwind Jaguars over the past two seasons. After a dismal 2-8 season in 2021-2022, the team turned things around with an 8-2 regular season record in 2022-2023, securing a spot in the TSSAA Class 5A playoffs. This remarkable turnaround was led by then-freshman quarterback Kelvin "Lil P" Perkins, who rose to prominence despite the team's previous struggles. Perkins went on to win the 2023 Tennessee Titans Mr. Football award for Class 5A, highlighting his stellar 2023-2024 season.

Building on a Solid Foundation

As the 2024-2025 high school football season approaches, the Southwind Jaguars aim to build on the solid foundation they've set. With championship aspirations in mind, the team is determined to maintain their focus. "Our goal is to go 1-0 each week," said Southwind head coach Jerome Griffin, emphasizing the importance of not overlooking any opponent.

Despite the loss of defensive end Kavion Benton (pictured below), who graduated and now plays for the University of Memphis Tigers, the Jaguars remain confident. Junior defensive end Charles Sullins has shown he is more than capable of filling Benton's shoes, finishing last season with impressive stats. D-Line coach Earl Lester, who has been with the team since 2015, remarked, "Last year might have been one of my best defensive lines I've ever coached in my 24 years of coaching."

Offensive Firepower

Returning quarterback Kelvin Perkins is poised for another remarkable season. Ranked number one in passing in Tennessee for Class 5A and number six overall, Perkins is a dual-threat on offense. Last season, he threw for 46 touchdowns and rushed for 11 more. With a solid offensive line, including sophomores Chris Campbell and Antonio Keefer, the Jaguars' offense is set to remain a formidable force.

Community Support and Excitement

The excitement around the Southwind community, affectionately known as the 38125, is evident. Principal John S. Bush expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "I'm excited because it gives the students an outlet, it gives our teachers an outlet, having our own stadium here… There’s nothing like coming to the jungle and just rooting on our Jaguars." Principal Bush has faith in the program, players, staff, and culture that Coach Griffin has established, believing they can build on last year's success and bring home the state title.

Preparing for the Season

The Jaguars recently traveled to Cleveland, Mississippi, for the Super Clash Jamboree, where they defeated the Cleveland Central Wolves 6-0. Despite the low score, the game was an opportunity to build team chemistry. "One of my takeaways from today’s game is chemistry," said assistant coach Rod Hall. "A lot of new faces started on both sides of the ball. It was a slow start, but things started clicking towards the end."

Training and Momentum

The Jaguars began their summer training camp in early June, filled with excitement and determination. They won the University of Memphis 7v7 tournament for the second year in a row, a testament to their momentum and consistency. Assistant coach Julian Stafford noted, "They were feeling out each other and would be rolling this summer after winning this tournament." The team is focused on sustaining their excellence and working towards becoming Tennessee Class 5A champions. In addition to their on-field training, Coach Griffin believes in developing well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to their community.

Challenges Ahead

While the Jaguars are poised for another successful season, they face several challenges. Their schedule includes tough matchups against some of the top teams in the state. The coaching staff has been studying game tapes and preparing strategies to counter their opponent's strengths. "We know we have a target on our backs," said Coach Griffin. "Every team we face will be bringing their best game. We have to stay focused and play our game."

Injuries are another potential hurdle. The coaching and medical staff have been diligent in ensuring the players are in peak physical condition. Regular fitness and conditioning sessions, coupled with a focus on proper nutrition and rest, are key components of their regimen. The team is also emphasizing mental health, recognizing the importance of maintaining a positive mindset amidst the pressures of a high-stakes season.

The Road to the Championship

The path to the state championship is fraught with challenges, but the Southwind Jaguars are ready to face them head-on. The combination of talent, preparation, community support, and a strong team culture sets them up as serious contenders for the title. The players are motivated by their past successes and driven by the desire to make history for their school and community.

The Jaguars' journey this season is not just about winning games; it's about building a legacy. Each player, coach, and supporter is contributing to a larger narrative of perseverance, teamwork, and excellence. The excitement and anticipation are building as the season opener approaches, and the Southwind community is ready to rally behind their team.

The Southwind Jaguars have set their sights on winning the state championship, driven by the determination of their players, the support of their community, and the leadership of their coaching staff. With a solid foundation, returning talent, and a supportive community, the Jaguars are poised to achieve their championship aspirations. As the 2024-2025 season unfolds, only time will tell if they can bring home the first-ever state title to Southwind and the 38125.
